# Reference Tag Organizer > Clean up and apply tags across a reference board. Normalize tags on a Pageboard project, then optionally add or remove a tag on every reference. Download the updated editable board. Part of usefulweb.app (https://usefulweb.app/). Results are deterministic calculations from the inputs and the listed assumptions; the API returns exactly what the web page shows. ## Use it - Human interface: https://pageboardtagorganizer.usefulweb.app/ (interactive tool at https://pageboardtagorganizer.usefulweb.app/tool) - JSON API: POST https://pageboardtagorganizer.usefulweb.app/api/v1/calculate with a JSON object of inputs (schema: https://pageboardtagorganizer.usefulweb.app/api/v1/tool) - OpenAPI: https://pageboardtagorganizer.usefulweb.app/openapi.json - MCP (Streamable HTTP): https://pageboardtagorganizer.usefulweb.app/mcp - tool `pageboard_tag_organizer` ## Inputs - project (textarea): Pageboard project JSON - action (select): Tag action - tag (text): Tag to add or remove ## Method - Trims and collapses whitespace in existing tags and removes empty tags. Tags that differ only in letter case are merged: the first spelling on the board (in reference order) is used everywhere, and duplicates on one reference are removed. - Add and remove apply to every reference after normalization. Adding a duplicate has no effect; removing compares without case. The entire operation is rejected if adding would exceed eight tags on any reference. - All other reference fields, links, notes, favorites and screenshots are preserved. No source pages are loaded. - The project download is the editable result; the editor link carries the same data and is omitted when it would exceed one million encoded characters.
