Reference Tag Organizer
Clean up and apply tags across a reference board.
Try an example: Clean up messy tags · Add a research tag to every reference · Remove a tag in any letter case
How it works
Normalize tags on a Pageboard project, then optionally add or remove a tag on every reference. Download the updated editable board.
- Trims and collapses whitespace in existing tags and removes empty tags. Tags that differ only in letter case are merged: the first spelling on the board (in reference order) is used everywhere, and duplicates on one reference are removed.
- Add and remove apply to every reference after normalization. Adding a duplicate has no effect; removing compares without case. The entire operation is rejected if adding would exceed eight tags on any reference.
- All other reference fields, links, notes, favorites and screenshots are preserved. No source pages are loaded.
- The project download is the editable result; the editor link carries the same data and is omitted when it would exceed one million encoded characters.

How to use the Reference Tag Organizer
Merge inconsistent tags across a Pageboard project and add or remove one tag on every reference in one run.
What it is for
Tags make a reference board searchable – until they drift. After a few weeks one card says typography, another Typography , a third has Forms twice. Filters then split what belongs together. The Reference Tag Organizer cleans this up for a whole Pageboard project at once and can add or remove one tag on every reference.
It returns a new editable project; your input is not changed. Titles, links, notes, favorites, screenshots and the moodboard stay exactly as they were.
In Pageboard itself, Organize → Tag filtered references… adds or removes a tag on just the references that match your current filters. This tool is the board-wide version for files, scripts and AI agents.
Worked example
The first example is a small imported board, "Imported bookmarks", with three references and messy tags:
- Pricing with three plans:
Pricing,pricing,Conversion table - Footer with a sitemap:
Navigation, navigation,Typography - Signup in one step:
Forms,typography,Forms
With Normalize only, the tool answered "Updated tags on 3 references. The board has 3 references." The result:
- Pricing with three plans:
Pricing,Conversion table - Footer with a sitemap:
Navigation,Typography - Signup in one step:
Forms,Typography
Spaces were trimmed and collapsed, duplicates on one card removed, and typography on the signup card took the spelling Typography that appears first on the board. The report now counts five distinct tags, with Typography on two references.
The third example removes TYPOGRAPHY from the same board. Matching ignores letter case, so both cards lost the tag; 3 references changed (the pricing card only through normalization) and four distinct tags remained. The second example adds research to all four references of the starter board – 4 changed.
How to read the result
- Changed counts references whose tag list differs from the input, including changes made by normalization.
- Distinct tags is the number of different tags left on the board.
- Download updated board and Open in Pageboard carry the cleaned project. Open it, check a few cards, and keep the old file until you are happy.
Tips and common mistakes
- Run Normalize only first and look at the result before adding or removing anything.
- Which spelling wins depends on order: the first spelling in reference order is used everywhere. Fix that one card in Pageboard first if you prefer another spelling.
- Adding fails for the whole board if any reference already has eight tags – nothing is half-applied.
- Enter exactly one tag; commas are not split into several tags.
- When adding a tag that already exists in another spelling (
Researchvsresearch), the existing spelling is used.
FAQ
Can I change only some references?
Not with this tool; add and remove apply to every reference. In Pageboard, filter the board and use Organize → Tag filtered references….
Does normalization change the order of tags?
No. Tags keep their order; only duplicates and empty tags are removed.
Are screenshots or links checked?
They are validated as part of the project but never changed, and no website is loaded.
